Me, Me, Me
This is the blog of Jessica DeVoe Riley. Call me Jessica or Riley. I answer to both. I might even answer to DeVoe, if you preface it with Bell Biv. Just know that I might respond by singing “Poison.”
So, about me, because that’s what this blog is all about, right…
I’m a mother of two and a special education teacher. I’m also a writer, and my first book is coming out sometime this year! You’ll find my blog topics tend toward the snarky and mundane, with reviews of books and family friendly products thrown in for good measure. When I’m not blogging, or teaching, or mothering, or, you know, living my life, I’m E-Zine Co-editor for Literary Mama and Producer for the internet talk show, The Duke Fightmaster Show. Ever heard the phrase ‘jack of all trades, master of none’? Yeah, me too.
When reading my blog, you might hear mention of these guys–
Husband. He’s a hard worker. He’s vegan. For reasons unbeknownst to anyone, he loves me and puts up with me. He once built me a desk out of an old crib. Isn’t he awesome?
The Boy. The other man in my life. My sweet, sweet son who knows how much Mommy loves her coffee. He has autism and severe eczema and multiple food allergies. He is not, however, allergic to meat (see above description of husband, second sentence). Meal time is interesting in my house.
Little No Limit. My daughter. She is JUST. LIKE. ME. It is a thought that leaves me lying awake at night. Until I fall asleep, that is.
The Notorious F.O.X. This is Dog Number One, a trash-talking, foul-mouthed beyotch, and I pity the fool who picks a fight with her.
Her Name is Rio. This is Dog Number Two, a sweet, silly girl who is scared of Notorious even though she is twice her size and half her age and could totally take her down if she just believed in herself.
Brassy Girl and Lawyer Girl. Best friends. Brassy hails from Nebraska. Lawyer is in law school. I assume their names require no further explanation?
Everyone else. The woman at the store who gave me a dirty look? That driver of the car with the lame vanity plate? It could be you.
You might also see references to these places–
Jax. J-ville. Jags-sonville. Jacksonville, FL. Where I grew up.
NOLA. New Orleans, Louisiana. Where I used to live.
Beach Cities. Cali. The OC. Orange County, California. Where I live now.
Some of my favorite posts:
On parenting a child with autism
On bad postcards: involving trees, small towns, and everything else
On limericks: limericks about high school
On haiku: haiku poetry cherishing David Hasselhoff
On the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Over summer 2008, I entered a speedwriting competition at the Santa Barbara Writers Conference that involved me writing a musical number based on a book in under 30 minutes. My book was Harry Potter. The end result sums me up pretty concisely:

I just finished Water for Elephants, and have been scanning for some explaination about the Jacob allusion. Thank you for posting your thoughts…they helped me sort out my own!
My own book club is meeting this week, so hopefully I’ll have something worthwhile to add!
Thanks,
Carrie
Hello!
We hope this email/post finds you happy and well! It was my sincere intention to write you sooner; however, we were on a long jaunt in the tradeshow world for Nana Star and Friends and time has not been in our favor these past few weeks. Maybe I’m a little slow, but I can’t find your email address on this blog?!? My apologies!
We wanted to thank you for your kind, thoughtful review of Nana Star and Nana Star and the Moonman. We greatly appreciate your input and opinions and we do pay attention to everything that is commented on and take note accordingly.
We do hope our next stories and toys head your way in the coming year. Our journey to bring Nana Star to life has been a labor of love and the road has been long; however, we feel that parents and educators “get it” and we do know children love the stories.
You have such a nice blog and we’re glad to be part of it. I will check back for sure. We have placed your review and live link back to your site on:
http://www.nanastar.com/bloggers.html - it should be up in the next day or two for sure. It will be nice for our visitors to know about your site and we just can’t thank you enough.
Take good care, keep writing and sharing your wonderful blog with the world! BTW - you “play” a GREAT writer on the internet!
Much kindness & laughter,
ee

Hi
I stumbled on your website while looking up possible IEP goals for my daughter’s transition to kindergarten. You drew me in with your wit and I have been reading along for the past half hour. It is nice to read a fellow-OC gal’s blog. Thanks for the good read!
Hello. My name is Angela and I’m an online editor for the Orange County Register and I recently discovered your blog.
We’d love to link to your blog from our Web site. Please let me know where in Orange County you are so I know where to put the link.
Thank you,
Angela Potter
