I recently came across a statistic (admittedly, on Facebook) that while the US accounts for 6% of the world population, we comprise 34% of the world’s obese. I can’t vouch for its accuracy but I have no trouble believing it. Some of our country’s obesity problem is related to poor eating habits, but let’s not forget the other half of being fit: eating right and exercising. These days, exercising is something people do at a gym or follow in a video or class, but there was a time where exercising was just being involved with the great outdoors and getting your heart pumping.

The Olympic games are coming up in London and while I’m sure everyone will be dying to see what Kate Middleton wears to the events, they’ll be even more excited to watch representatives of their countries participate in the world’s largest gathering of  athletes. The Olympics promote more than friendly international competition, though. The theme for this summer’s Olympics is “Inspire a Generation.” Inspire a generation to do what, exactly? When Pierre de Coubertin started these modern Olympics in 1912, he introduced the motto, “The most important thing is not to win but to take part!” Perhaps the Olympics of today wish to inspire our generation of children to take back the outdoors, to take part in something more than an interactive video game and retail therapy at the mall. It’s time to run around, skate, bike, jump, swim, surf, and play.

In the spirit of the Olympics and to encourage children to get out and get fit, USA BMX, together with the US Olympic Committee, are offering FREE race days at 300+ BMX tracks around the country, from June 22nd to July 1st.
