God, Riley -- yes, I do have a first bike story, but nothing that could top that! That is a lovely, sad story. I can't imagine how your neighbors coped with such a cruel double-dose of grief.

I still remember one time I got on the wrong train in Tokyo. I had my three-year-old with me and I had to rush her across the tracks to the right train. And all the while, she was staring up at me with wondering eyes repeating, "Mommy's bistake, mommy's BISTAKE!" as though it was a big deal that I'd gotten something wrong. All parents make things up as they go along and put on shows of strength for their kids. But what else can we do?

My mother couldn't ride a bicycle either. But no way would she have tried in front of us...

This was a beautiful tribute to those parents, Riley. It reminded me of a family we knew that lost both of their children in less than six months - one to cancer and one to a gun accident (he sat next to me in eighth grade English, then died that summer). The parents moved away soon after their second child died. Did Nice Family remain in the neighborhood?

Wow. I can't imagine two worse ways to lose your children. Love the message here...I hope my children don't learn those two lessons until they are a bit over 8. :)

Riley, that was really beautiful - in a very sad way. A tribute, in a way, to Nice Family.

I don't have many bike stories. I'll have to keep thinking...

SHE WAS KILLED BY A SERIAL KILLER. GOOD GRIEF. I've known more than my share of people who were murdered, but those were mostly domestic murders.
I don't remember my first bike - I know I was a bit late learning how to ride, but that was out of cowardice. I'd always had bikes.
